Roger Wiegand

Wiegand’s current research focuses on the homology and representation theory of commutative Noetherian rings. He joined the Department of Mathematics at the University of Nebraska in 1972 and has remained there, except for sabbatical leaves at the University of Connecticut, the University of Wisconsin, Purdue University, and the Mathematical Sciences Research Center. He retired from teaching in 2011 but remains actively involved in mathematical collaborations and international travel. He has given invited mathematics talks in 20 different countries.

In 2002 he was awarded a Willa Cather Professorship, a title he retains as an Emeritus Professor. He has directed 20 Ph.D. theses, all at the University of Nebraska, and has served on external juries for several other dissertations. In 2001 he received the University-wide “Excellence in Graduate Education Award”, and in 2005 the Outstanding Research and Creativity Award from the UNL College of Arts and Sciences.

His research has been supported by the National Science Foundation and the National Security Agency and is currently supported by a Simons Foundation Collaboration Grant. He is co-author (with his former student Graham Leuschke) of the book “Cohen-Macaulay Representation”, published by the American Mathematical Society in 2012.
