For profound results from the geometric theory of measure

David Preiss is a leading expert on the geometric measure theory – roughly speaking, it is a theory that studies the interaction between geometry and the measurement of size (for example, areas) in Euclidean and very general spaces. It is an essential part of modern mathematical analysis, whose techniques and results are used mainly in the calculus of variations, and through which they also influence solving of partial differential equations, probability theory or numerical mathematical problems. And David Preiss is a real leader in this field — he published an important part of his results in 1987 in an article for Annals of Mathematics and is still one of the few Czech authors to receive an ERC Advanced Grant for internationally recognized experts, unique in his home environment. The works of David Preiss have been awarded, for example, the Pólya Prize of the London Mathematical Society and the Ostrowski Prize; the scientist himself is an honorary member of the Learned Society of the Czech Republic and an elected member of the British Royal Society.
