The Neuron Fund is a nonprofit organization funded entirely by private benefactors. Its mission is to support outstanding researchers of the Czech Republic. It was founded by Karel Janeček, mathematician, entrepreneur benefactor and political reformer. The Neuron Fund has a Scientific Board chaired by prof. Pavel Hobza, an internationally acknowledged scientist, the most cited Czech scientist, Distinguished Chair at the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry with the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, physical chemistry Professor at Charles University, Prague, and Palacky University, Olomouc.
Each year, the Fund awards two types of awards in seven scientific disciplines: humanities, medicine, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and computer sciences. The first prize, worth CZK 1 million (approx. € 40.000), is awarded up to three scientists for scientific breakthrough. The second prize, worth CZK 2 million (approx. € 80.000), is awarded to one scientist for outstanding lifelong contribution to scientific research. The award's monetary value is the highest in our country. The award is supported solely by successful Czech entrepreneurs who share our main goal to motivate the scientists to excellence and to cultivate modern patronage to shape a better society.
