prof. MUDr. Josef Koutecký, DrSc.

Member of the Science Board, Medicine

Born in 1930, Prague. After graduating from the Faculty of Pediatric Medicine, Charles University in Prague, in 1955 he started working at a hospital in Nový Bydžov and later Janské Lázně spa hospital. In 1957, he transferred to the Pediatric Surgery Clinic, Faculty of Pediatric Medicine, Charles University where he began specializing in pediatric oncology. In 1978, the clinic became part of the Motol university hospital and Koutecký became Head of the Oncology Department.

In 1983, Koutecký became Head of the Pediatric Oncology Clinic. In 1987, he was appointed Professor of oncology. From 1990 to 1997 and from 2000 to 2006, he was Dean of the 2nd Faculty of Medicine, Charles University. From 1997 to 2000, he was Pro-rector for public relations, Charles University. Member and honorary member of several Czech and international associations.

One of the founding members of the Learned Society of the Czech Republic, served as the Learned Society Chair from 1998 to 2002, founding member of the Czech Medical Academy.

For many years, he was Chair of the National Gallery Foundation, National Theater Foundation, Governing Board of the Academy of Fine Arts, Hollar National Association of Artists, member of the Czech Chamber Music Association, former member of the National Gallery Science Board.

Author of hundreds of research papers, seven monographs, several university textbooks. Co-author and editor of anniversary publications Étos Hippokrates to celebrate 40 years of the 2nd Faculty of Medicine, and Spondeo ac pollicear to celebrate its 50th anniversary. Has also written a children's book, five volumes of collected texts and two memoirs.

Professor Koutecký has received over 50 awards, including the Medal of Merit from President Václav Havel, the National Governmental Award, Honorary Medal of the Czech Academy of Sciences "De scientia et humanitae optime meritis", Gold Medal of the Charles University in Prague, Gold Medal of the 2nd Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, Learned Society Medal for Contribution to Science, Josef Hlavka Medal, Czech Ethics Forum Award, Czechoslovak Society for Science and Arts Award, Prague Silver Medal, Medal of the Czech Medical Association of Jan Evangelista Purkyne, Honorary Medal for long-term collaboration with the National Theater in Prague.
